Momma D's Casa di Pasta is giving away a full year of free meals. Henry Dutkowski, owner of Momma D's, decided years ago it was about time to start celebrating the longevity of Momma D's restaurant, now in its 23rd year.

Dutkowski also wanted to celebrate his grandmother, Antonia DiMambro, otherwise known as "Momma D." She was the creator of the Italian recipes that are still at the core of the restaurant's menu today.

This year, in honor of being in business for 23 years, the restaurant will be giving away a gift certificate with an approximate value of $1,196. That equals one $23 meal per week for 52 weeks.

"The winners in the past have been very generous, giving it to co-workers, using it themselves, giving it to churches and different organizations, which is nice," he said.

"It's a nice thing that everybody does. All of our winners have been very generous with their winnings. It's great for us, it's great for them," Dutkowski said.

Momma D's is Italian food, yes, that has evolved a bit over the 20+ years to suit the American palate perfectly.

The recipes have been handed down from Momma D herself, who came from Portello, Italy. The current owner, Henry Dutkowski, is the grandson of Momma D and has been running the restaurant since 1992.

The place is all about comfort. The waitresses are all in their Momma D's T-shirts and know everyone and can recommend dishes. They're happy and friendly and informative.

And the menu is so extensive it's a bit overwhelming. Veal, chicken, combo platters for apps and entrees, pizza, and seafood. Family bowl servings of pasta with seven different sauce choices, from carbonara to marinara to alfredo. That's just the beginning.

There's also a full bar and a very small wine list, but you can get one-half or full carafes of a pretty decent Chianti or Pinot Grigio at a good price.

Oh, and don't forget to try the tapioca pudding! It's something rarely seen on a menu and is so creamy and tasty it should not be missed, nor should the tiramisu.

Also note that the restaurant is a bit off-the-beaten path since it's on the Route 1 Bypass, between the Portsmouth traffic circle and Woodbury Avenue.

Momma D' s Casa di Pasta will be helping New Franklin Elementary School students participate in next fall' s Environmental School program by donating 25 percent of all proceeds made on March 11 to the school.

This is the third consecutive year the restaurant will donate to the program. Funds raised will help fifth-grade students participate in a five-day, hands-on learning program offered through the Seacoast Science Center.

" (We're) just trying to be a good community neighbor, quite honestly," said owner Henry Dutkowski. He makes it a goal for the restaurant to participate in various fund-raising events nine months out of the year, excluding the busy and hectic summer months.
